The Assam government alleged that Bangladesh has encroached upon 499.79 acres of Indian land, including two tea gardens, and urged New Delhi to take up the matter with Dhaka urgently.

"Our records show that Bangladesh is in illegal possession of 189.06 acres in Assam's Dhubri district while the remaining is in Karimganj district," state Revenue Minister Bhumidhar Barman told journalists.

"Two tea gardens in Karimganj district are under illegal occupation of Bangladesh."

One encroachment dates back to 1948 and another to 1965, he said.

"Although the Indira-Mujib pact was signed in 1974 to resolve border dispute and issues relating to encroachment, the agreement has not been implemented in totality," the minister said.

"We have once again exhorted the central government to ask Dhaka to vacate our land immediately without any confrontation," Barman said.

The barbed wire fencing along the 262 km land border that Assam shares with Bangladesh is nearing completion. "By March 2010, the entire border fencing work would be completed," the minister said.

The porous India-Bangladesh border has always been a bone of contention with allegations that hordes of illegal Bangladeshi migrants enter Assam for livelihood, thereby upsetting the region's demographic profile.

Sometimes I feel that India is too lenient and over cautious when it comes to foreign affairs. Many times India acts at last moment.

this is not a good news and indian government should take this issue seriously. if everyone keeps on encroaching on indian land this way, then india would have to give away huge land to the foreign nation which would be a sign of its incompetence to defend its territorial encroachment.

this is again a question on indian security.. its a heavy breach that a country like bangladesh can dare encroach 500 acres of large indian land. what are the government officials doing when bangladesh has taken over so much of indian land?? they are least bothered about the east indian status.. i think media should take such matters seriously and report it questioning the competence of indian security forces and government authorities concerned

this is pretty shocking news as how can indian authorities allow such a massive encroachment. this only shows the sluggishness of indian authorities and their helplessness to do anything on such issues unless they are put to shame on cameras. why is it always like this?, that no gov officials wake up and act on issues unless questioned by media on camera? we have to atleast take up international issues seriously, if not domestic.

India is a large nation and since its borders are pretty much uneven towards the eastern side, it becomes more prone to encroachment as in the case of Bangladesh's encroachment upon Indian territory. Indian government must increase its border security forces and tighten up the rules and regulations so that encroachment and even human trafficking is prevented.
