MELBOURNE: A Young Indian with permanent residency in Australia was on Sunday fatally stabbed in the abdomen by unidentified assailants here while on his way to work, the first death in a slew of vicious attacks on the community members.

Nitin Garg, who migrated from Punjab, was attacked in a park when he was walking towards fast-food joint Hungry Jack's restaurant, where he worked part-time.

He staggered into the restaurant on the corner of Somerville Road and Geelong Road, West Footscray, about 10 pm local time on Saturday night (0330 HRS IST this morning) and pleaded for help before collapsing.

He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital but later died, according to TV reports.

Police said the youth from Newport had traveled to Yarraville train station about 9.30 pm local time (0300 HRS IST), then walked along Anderson Street to Cruikshank Park, where he was stabbed in the abdomen.

He managed to stumble some 300 meters to the Hungry Jack's restaurant.

Homicide Squad Senior Sergeant Dave Snare described it as a vicious attack. He said at this stage there was no known motive and there was no evidence the youth was targeted because of his race.

"I think to draw any conclusion as to the motive may interfere with the investigation and would be presumptuous at this stage," he said.

    Attacks against Indians in Australia

The Deputy Prime Minister of Australia has rejected India ’s charge on racial discrimination. She has termed the incidents as mere urban crimes. But if we critically analyze the incidents we distinctly find some racial elements in the attack.

Most probably, many of these attacks were targeted on the Arabs. Attacks on a Sikh student when he was mistaken as an Arab and racial abuse on Arabs bring this fact to highlight. But we can’t generalize Indian and Arabs only because of brown skin. Whatever the reason be, all types of discrimination or attack on racial ground should be deplored.

While protesting such incidents, we should keep in mind that it will not enrage the mainstream in Australia . They are accusing the Indians of trying to create a mini India in Australia . And with such a huge population India can easily do it. But Indians should also keep in mind the proverb, “When you are in Rome , behave like the Romans”. Yes, the Indian should try to assimilate in the main stream. But it does not mean that they should forget the Indian culture and traditions. A person can respect the Australian culture even after being an Indian by heart.

But how can we protest these incidents. I think, “ Gandhigiri ” is the best way. Otherwise it may result in backlash leading to more attack on Indians.

    What can we Indians do?

Let us Register protest to Govt of Australia. Make the government there appreciate the magnitude of the impact of such incidents in here in India. This will ensure that the Government there acts and act fast. Write to Australian High Commissioner to India!

Let us honor the Australian citizens staying in India

Let us felicitate the Australian cricket team.

Let us make them feel the warmth of Indian hospitality

    Yes we do!
Unfortunately Julia Gillard would not understand it. She's not one among the victims now, is she?:(

Sikhs wear turban, and these racist morons could not even distinguish between a turban and a "whatever" Osama Bin Laden or other Arabs wear. This is the reason just after 9/11 a Sikh man was gunned down in USA, mistakenly as an Arab.

Ah! Arabs are not brown skin people. They are very fair.

Yes it should be deplored. However the problem with Australia is that even the political and elite class does not want to admit racism exists in Australia. Acknowledging that would be bad press!

I admit it big time! Been there, seen that.

I disagree. Retaliation is the best option now. Retaliation, nowhere else, but in Australia. Time to kick some *** and show them what Indians are made of!

Yeah! In India treat them as honored guests. Show them the cultural difference.

    Indians in Australia

The Indian Culture is engraved in the minds of all Indians regardless of the religion. Retaliation in the same coin was never our culture. We have to demonstrate our power to endure even the worst attack on our people. Most of us do believe in our predetermined destiny. Fight against injustice, but do not attack the unprotected.

Whatever may be the reason for attack on Indians , it is always unfortunate. It is personal fanaticism in the minds of laymen who don't want global fraternity where all great philosophers and businessmen, Governments, think to come into reality. to protect our men and women, students, businessmen and all Indians in Australia, we should jointly protest through net and emails to Australia Embassy in India as well as lodge descent note with Australian Govternment on authoritative website.

I am an Indian and live & work in Australia and I don't think Gandhigiri or the peace movement would work at all.

Its probably precisely because of this Indians are often seen as soft targets and the attitude is - lets bully them as they wont retaliate. Bullies don't like it when their 'victims' fight back.

Let us not misunderstand - I am saying self defence is the right of any person - whether u be an Indian, Chinese or Alien. If someone attacks me you can be damn sure I will give them as good as they gave me or better.

Why don't these people attack the Chinese - because they know the Chinese will fight back and bring out their Triads and chopping knifes.

No one has the right to attack anyone else whether for robbery, rape, racial hatred or any other reason.

This world we live in is not Gandhi ji's world - those days are gone - unfortunately the only language bullies and cowardly murderers understand is if we fight back. SO this is what we must do and stand together as a united front not divided by language, race, creed or caste. After all India is the biggest secular democracy in the world.

With due respect to 'The Mahatma' I doubt whether Gandhigiri is the option here. The Satyagraha movement took the British by surprise because it was the first time it was adopted by anyone. The whole world was watching and the British did not know how to respond.

The White Austrailian is an out and out racist. Gandhigiri will be seen as a sign of cowardice by him and more attacks will follow. Indians down under are afraid of retaliating for fear of deportation among other things. Parents of many students have taken huge education loans and the children do not want to risk it.

The Indian Government should show some spine and react strongly. Most surprising is that the Indian Govt is keeping quiet even after so many attacks the Australian Police and Govt. is still maintaining that the attacks are not racially motivated! Can anything be more ridiculous than that.

The one thing that the Indian Govt can do is the waive the Education loans of the Indian students who are studying in Australia and also issue a strong travel advisory against travel to Australia. Then I am sure a lot of students will come back. Until then we will have keep hearing about attacks on Indians.

    Regards
    KINI

Gandhigiri is buzz word today but desirable when other party know that we can reply them in Subhash chander way also. so friends we should come out from garb of the soft power and state and work for country on each and every front security :electronic warfare missiles etc. food security.etc.we must create and Rand on all fronts.

Why do the Indians go to Australia??
Education is the major source of income for Australian institutions.
Then better avoid Aussies to stop crime against Indians.

I feel ashamed to lodge protest against Australia. This is because we should first learn that we are Indian citizen and have ONE CITIZENSHIP. However we are fighting against our own the people saying that they belong to other states and have no right to stay in another state. What is the big deal if Australians beat or treat Indians in Australia in the same way which is altogether different country. At least they have booked the culprits and punished them quickly but we have still not done anything even though 2-3 years have elapsed.

    Bingo!!! Well said.
Well, racism exists in India too. But then the Indian Constitution guarantees that. We are already divided as Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Baniya, OBC, SC, ST and what not!!!
Vote bank politics at its best.

Create public opinion and raise this issue

It won't be wise to fight back with millions of Australians with just a few thousand Indians. It will only worsen the situation. Moreover, the Indians staying in Australia have gone their to study or to work. Engaging in battle will only ruin their career. The best option is to create public opinion and raise this issue so that Australian government is compelled to safeguard the Indians.

    Nice thought!!!
However, people who indulge in these shameful acts are in 10s and not in millions, and mostly migrants from other countries + Australians. Majority of Australians are educated and stay away from these acts, and even condemn them.

Curry Bashing stopped in United Kingdom, when Bangladeshis started to retaliate, followed by retaliation from Indians and Pakistanis there in United Kingdom.

    Hi Everyone

have something to share with all of you on this regard. I am one of those Indians who has moved to Australia, some three years ago as a student, I was in Melbourne for two years before I moved to Perth in Western Australia. Altough I believe there is racism in Australia but it is just limited to a small population of Australia. Listen guys you know there is much more complicated caste system in our India, and now and then there have been a lot of riots regarding that system, leading to the killing of hundreds and thousand of people each time. Just ask yourself how many a times have you ill treated someone from a lower caste than yourself. That makes you racist as well. The thing that is going on in Australia is that there is a rise in the street crime and that is because of the recession and a lot of people have lost their jobs. Even in Perth I have fealt there is a lot of street crime as someone gets hurt and killed every now and then. The place where I work in Perth is one of those notorious places where you can get easily robbed, but I will say that your safety is in your own hands. A lot of my co workers have had trouble there, who happen to be whites, i do take some precautions to avoid a trouble and tell my colleagues to follow them but you know nothing is certain. I have lived in Australia and I have experienced the life here, which I have truly enjoyed. All the Australians Who I know, they just love me and even think that I am better than some or a lot of Australians they know. The idea here is we are out of our homeland and we need to leave our mark in the Australian society not as someone who is begging for mercy and quick action all the time but as someone who is hard working and an efficient worker.

I hope you get the message.
    Thanks,
    Harneet Singh
