by : India Today The government is considering a proposal to raise intake of cadets from the National Cadet Corps (NCC) into the prestigious Indian Military Academy (IMA) from 64 to 80, Lt. General R.K. Karwal, Director-General, NCC, said today. Alarmed over the shortfall of officers, the government is also likely to hike the intake of NCC 'C' certificate holders into the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, from 79 to 100, he added. Addressing a news conference coinciding with the NCC Republic Day Camp, 2009, General Karwal said since 2007 the NCC is working on a programme to raise the enrolment of cadets, a majority of them would be girls. The strength of the NCC would go up from the present 13 lakhs to 15 lakhs in five years, he added. The annual NCC Republic Day Camp would be inaugurated on Thursday, Jan. 08, 2009 by the Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari. There are 1,950 cadets participating in the month-long camp. Four bands would be participating in the camp, Sainik School, Kapurthala for the first time.
