Most of the people today feel that speaking English is a status symbol whereas the one who speaks in Hindi is somewhere inferior. I believe this is certainly a wrong perception, we are Indians, Hindi is our mother tongue, and how can speaking the Matra-bhasha make you inferior?? This wrong perception has been long established in our minds that need to be cleared out. Speaking a foreign language is good and shows your proficiency but it nowhere shows your integrity within your own country. You are living in India but supporting English and western culture that is also fine to some extent but what goes wrong is to underestimate your own mother tongue and your culture. If we see the foreigners they are so loyal to their mother tongue and culture they never underestimate their dialect and culture then why do we Indians over-react over certain things? Somewhere such actions show that the British’s' are bygone but they still rule our minds to a major extent that we have begun to feel inferior about our own culture and even in speaking our mother tongue. Guys! Grow up! In fact I feel if an Indian is not able to speak his/her own language well but is fluent in speaking a foreign dialect and moreover feels a proud over this then that person certainly should feel shame.

    भारतीय होके अपनी मात्र-भाषा नहीं बोल सकते और ना ही उसपे गर्व करते हो तो किस बात के भारतीय हो?

The perception that English is a superior language dates back to the time when the freedom struggle was being fought. Some of the so called upper classes in India were taught in English. Therefore, in the rest of the country, it started being perceived as superior. This attitude continues even today at some places.

Hindi, being the native language, should be respected and not considered inferior. However, the language that you know and speak should entirely be your own choice. The respect is a must but the choice is yours!
