Modernization has touched India and this is quite evident from the kind of life people are leading today. But with modernization came a long many evils and a question that keeps lingering in my mind is “are women really safe in India?” Every morning when I sit down with a cup of tea and the newspaper, this particular question keeps coming in my mind. The newspaper now-a-days is filled with news related to many issues where women are being victims of crimes like rapes, domestic violence, dowry death, sexual assault ,etc and these news disturbs me a lot.

India is a nation where women are worshiped and this is the same nation where women are treated as a material object and also as an object to gratify the innate sexual desires of the male members of the society. India is considered as the 4th unsafe country for women, which is a matter of shame for we Indians. In recent times many cases of rape has been registered and the victims are mostly young and adolescent girls. Moreover, women tourists who visit India, fall victims of rape. It has also been seen that women are blamed for these increasing rapes but how far is this blame justified? Many comment that the victims invite crimes like rape by wearing short and revealing dresses. However, in my view modernization does not just mean using high-end gadgets etc, but modernization also broadens the mentality of the society. In a modern society these kinds of crimes are less but it is increasing in our Modern India and we are responsible for whatever is happening.

Women are a part of the society and they should be respected. Modern society does not have gender gap; it treats every individual equally irrespective of their sex, caste or creed. However, it is really sad that women are not safe in our so-called modern society, although women have been subjected to many changes in recent times and Indian women have been able to mount higher, even though with difficulties with ramification in corporate enterprises etc, still women are not given equal status and they are still subjected to various crimes other than rapes. Domestic violence and dowry death are also increasing and many cases have been reported in recent times. India still has a male dominating society and women are considered as weaker and vulnerable section of the society and this is the main reason behind various crimes against women.

India can only be safe for women when people will start respecting women and stop being a male chauvinist society. Every boy should be taught to respect women since childhood and this can be an effective way to reduce crime against women. Although laws are there to protect women, it is not effective enough. Women will be safe only with change in the society and education is an effective tool that can change the society and make India a safe place for women and a better nation.

The increasing crime in India does not depict the picture that Women are safe in India. Although, there are laws to protect women from falling victim of crimes still it has not been effective enough. The problem is that laws in our nation lack proper implementation. The only way to protect the women from falling victim is to teach the young boys to respect women from young age.

Although India has embraced modernization, the mentality of Indian men are still the same. They still want to dominate the women folk and the crimes against women that are escalating day by day is a prove of male chauvinist society. These increasing crimes speaks it clearly that India is not safe for Women. The society needs to change and the male members should accept that they are not superior to women and everyone is equal, then only these crimes can be reduced and India will be a safe place for women.
