Are self-defense classes for women a way of avoiding the reality?

Considering the rising number of rape and molestation cases, urban women are feeling more and more insecure everyday. They are not secured even if they are travelling with a male friend. Under such circumstances, many are of the opinion that women ought to attend self defense classes. On the other hand, this actually means, accepting what is happening as the usual and not asking for a change in the root problem. Do you think women training themselves for protection is a way of solving these problems or only a means of letting them continue?

In my opinion, self defense classes are important for women to protect themselves from some inevitable circumstances but it is not a solution to prevent the increasing number of crimes, especially rapes in our country. According to me the root problem should be addressed and removed instead of giving precautionary measures. It is definitely a way to avoid the reality. What do you think?

Yes, but then we cannot really rely on removal of root cause of problem. It takes time to address such issue because, there needs to change in law and judicial system as well as change in thinking of men. But taking precautionary measures such as teaching self defences to women can be of some help to address the issue. Although its not 100% foolproof way to solve the issue, it does help women in some way.
