The day when Anna Hazare started his second freedom struggle in India on April 5, 2011, not many of us were aware about him and his motive behind his fast. Within the small span of five day this Gandhi follower became the role model of 121 Crores Indians and put Government of India on back foot to accept the Janlokpal in its maiden format to change their old teeth less puppet Lokpal.

    A revolution Ahead

The war that Anna Hazare started to fight with the government authorities was meant to wage a war against corruption in India. The fast until death was started at Jantar Mantar to force the government to form a joint committee with equal numbers of representatives of the Government and the civil society. The bill was supposed to be the most stringent weapon against the profound corruption in every segment of society. Son of an unskilled laborer Baburao Hazare and Laxmi Bai Hazare, Anna Hazare left his education when he was in class 5th due to the poverty.

    Trendsetter at Home

A great admirer of Swami Vivekananda, Anna Hazare worked as a driver in the Indian Army and during this tenure he was posted to several states like Sikkim, Bhutan, Jammu-Kashmir, Assam, and Mizoram. After Indo-Pak war he left the army job and returned to his ancestral village Ralegaon Siddhi where emerging social problems were on the peak with mere 400 to 500 mm of annual rainfall and weirs to retain rainwater. Anna took inspiration from a rain water harvesting program and implemented it in Ralegaon Siddhi and in no time it became the first role model from the worst village to an ideal village.

    Contributions That Count

Anna did a lot for the civil society and became the symbol of revolutionary changes in the Indian political and civil system at every level. Let’s enlist some of his hand outs to the society.

    • In 1991 he came forward with Bhrashtachar Virodhi Jan Aandolan (BVJA) or public movement against corruption

    • To oppose the infused corruption in the system Anna returned the Padmashree Award to Vriksha Mitra Award to the Government of India.

    • Hazare raised issues of massive land purchase by a Shivsena’ s leader in September 1996

    • In 1997 Anna invited the masses in Azad Maidan in Mumbai to create awareness about RTI amongst the youth.

    • In 2003 Anna Hazare raised corruption charges against some ministers and MPs Congress-NCP government and on 23 February 2005, Suresh Jain, Nawab Malik and Padmasinh Patil. Suresh Jain and Nawab Malik resigned from the cabinet.

History has a lot to say for Anna Hazare. His current agitation at Jantar Mantar has shown his popularity and credibility in the masses whether Children, Youngsters, Women and men. The support he got from the masses in his agitations and movements, reminds us the legendary leadership of none other than Mahatma Gandhi.

A number of awards and recognitions that he achieved endorse incredible thought process of this larger than life personality.

    1. Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra award by the Government of India
    2. Krishi Bhushana award by the Government of Maharashtra.
    3. Padmashri award, by the Government of India
    4. Padmabhushan award, by the Government of India
    5. World Bank's 2008 Jit Gill Memorial Award for Outstanding Public Service

Gandhiji's teaching has not only relevance today but will have fruits for future generations as well. Gandhism is not just a philosophy but is a way of living life by adopting certain principles like non violence truth. many leaders have today adopted Gandhian way of living and among them Anna Hazaare led a successful campaign against corruption noted Gandhian and Magasaysay award winner L.C. Jain recently passed away.

You can say that Anna Hazare is a new india's M.K. GAndhi as he follows the rules of Mahatma Gandhi. The mantra of Non Violence. I guess why only Anna Hazare if we all follow the mantra of anna hazare which is indeed not bad and has the relevance in the contemporary world as due to these reasons only the bill was passed. So there is no denying the fact that Anna HAzare is a real reflection of MK Gandhi in today's time.

You can call Anna HAzare a modern day Mahatama Gandhi because whatever he has achieved he has done it all alone with the help of masses and that too by following the footsteps of Mahatama Gandhi. He is completely against Non-violence and the live example of Satyagrah. His fasting and determination make us remind the situation that MK Gandhi once created at the time of freedom struggle. He is an amazing person.

Yes, definitely, Anna Hazare is a modern day mahatama gandhi as he did what others are unable to do by following the Gandhian principles. He took the step out in public and with the weapon of no violence he forced indian government to accept his demands of jan Lokpal bill and earlier it was RTI ( right to information act. )

Anna hazare has taken stand to follow non violence and carry out the agitations against the current lok pal bill. His principles are very much like those mahatma gandhi who was the great follower of non violence. He is very much similar to the modern day mahatma gandhi as he has successfully brought the RTI in india with the same principles and now is longing for Jan Lok Pal bill.

@greatindia: I do not think personally that he will be able to repeat the same success in the case if Jan lok pal bill. Though, I appreciate his effort of bringing RTI in scene and made it a law but still his success to Bill is quite doubtful. He is a great man indeed and I completely agree with the above statement of calling him a modern day mahatma gandhi.

Anna hazare is an ex-army man. He has become a social worker right after providing his services for Indian military. He introduced "model village" scheme in Maharashtra. He developed a village, which was a drought prone area. Anna's ideas for rural development worked efficiently and the village was well developed. He is very active in rural development programs, some programs are used by government. Now Anna hazare is working on anti corruption policy. He demands government to pass lokpal bill. Government acted very stupidly towards him and put him on jail on 16th august. His voice is clear, he doesn't want to dissolve the government but he wants his recommended lokpal bill to be passed in lok sabha.

Anna Hazare follows the foot step of Mahatma Gandhi by adhering to non-violence. He is a person who has brought revolution against corruption and is constantly pressurizing the Government to pass the Jan Lokpal bill which will help in curbing corruption from the nation. He has done a lot for the villages of Maharashtra. I would not say that he is the modern day Mahatma Gandhi because he follows non-violence to protest. I respect him for his endeavor in changing the nation and he is way above Mahatma Gandhi in my view.

It is true that Anna Hazare is the modern day Gandhi as he follows the foot-step of Mahatma Gandhi and is still working with great perseverance and non-violence for passing the Jan Lokpal Bill with the view to eradicate corruption from India. If corruption is uprooted from India, several issues that India is facing today will be solved. He is doing this with the view to freeing India from the evils of corruption. He is in all sense the modern day Gandhi.
