Well, can corruption ever be eradicated? The cynic in me replies with a resounding ‘NO’! Then again, even if it can’t be eradicated, can it be reduced? That is where the optimist in me continues to remain optimist!
After all, isn’t it true that under the UPA-2, there were scams galore (which no wonder had made the UPA-2 regime…the best days for news channels…after all, they had much to garner TRPs on), but those things have visibly changed under the NaMo rule!

In fact, since the coming of Narendra Modi to power, there hasn’t been a single media channel exclusive on a newly unearthed scam at the hands of the present government (and I am sure, it is not because of a lack of trying on part of the media houses or news channels).
This, of course, makes the hopeful ME hope that scams at least is not the core competency of the Modi sarkar. Not to mention, the several steps that have been taken by the Modi government to curb the menace of black money and corruption has made the cynical ME…a convert. In case, you’re wondering what those steps were, let’s take a quick look at some of the important initiatives taken by the current government to deal with the corruption monstrosity.
If we were to compare the current government’s move vis-a-vis the earlier government’s, all we need to do is take a look at the ‘coal block allocations’.
Think about this: When it comes to dealing with corruption, being honest is not enough! One also needs to be ingenious enough to think of ways to prevent future corruption. This is where the Modi government has made much strides. For instance, in the case of the coal block allocation; after the Supreme Court scrapped the auction of the 204 coal blocks, Modi and his cabinet decided to opt the e-route by auctioning off the coal blocks online. This not only made the process better and smoother, it would also help in times to come by making room for more objectivity, transparency and fairness.
In fact, that has been the biggest accomplishment of the Modi government — “DIGITISATION”. In fact, it is this digitisation that is helping India and Indians fight corruption…on all levels! For example, once upon a time, touts and agents would hound you at passport offices. In exchange for getting your passports made, they would charge you exorbitant amounts. Of course, you had little choice…for without these touts, you were looking at long bureaucratic back-breaking processes that meant long queues and unending hassles. Of course, these touts did not work alone; they worked in collusion with the passport office babus.
Thus, even though the cynic in me does tend to argue whether or not corruption can ever truly be eradicated…the truth is that Modi’s digitisation drive has helped curb this menace to a great extent. Whether one is registering a new company online or applying for a Voter ID Card, we Indians have managed to break free from the babu-raj, which was the bedrock of corruption…once upon a time!
