The BJP wave seems to have swept the MCD Elections in Delhi too, with BJP retaining its strong-hold on all the three civic bodies, i.e. the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation; while registering a third-time win by winning 66 out of the 104 wards (North), 70 out of 104 wards (South) and 48 out of 64 wards (East). While the election result brought cheers for the BJP, AAP stood a distant second, Congress had to make peace with its abysmal performance. What’s more? The day of reckoning, in fact, ushered the message (of BJP’s substantial win) — loud and clear! — within an hour of the counting.
This has clearly accomplished what BJP under the strong and able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah respectively, wanted to accomplish…which was to send a strong message to both Arvind Kejriwal and the Congress, especially given it was slated as setting the tune for the forthcoming general assembly elections in 2019. It has now become abundantly clear that under Kejriwal’s debilitated leadership, the AAP is looking at troubled times ahead. As for Congress…well, the less said…the better!
Of course, whether or not one believes that this massive BJP-win in the MCD Election is a clear-cut indication of BJP’s unstoppable force (especially post its massive win in UP and Uttarakhand), one needs to acknowledge that under Modi’s leadership, the BJP’s flag is indeed flying high, which means the opposition needs to seriously rethink its 2019 general election strategies.
Then again, if we look at BJP’s performance…election after election, we do notice a positive trend, in BJP’s favour. Thus, it certainly will not come as a surprise to anyone if BJP was to indeed win the 2019 general elections. Of course, the reason for this is not because it won the MCD elections in Delhi…even though, it does bring to light a very important point…the point of leadership.
You see, the MCD elections has established — once and for all! — what we all have known for a long time, i.e. BJP under Narendra Modi and Amit Shah has found sound and able leadership, while AAP seems to be floundering under Arvind Kejriwal. The fact that AAP summarily got rid of its founder members like Prashant Bhushan (and consequently the tutelage of his father, the renowned Supreme Court lawyer, Shanti Bhushan) and Yogendra Yadav, AAP has quickly found itself in quicksand and seems to be grappling to find credible faces. As far as the Congress is concerned, there is not a gap when it comes to leadership, there is a huge chasm, for it has ceased to be a political party (with a clear-cut political mandate) but has become the personal property of Sonia Gandhi and her son-daughter duo. While some are batting for Rahul, voices have started expressing dissent and are now calling for Priyanka to hold the fort.
Of course, whether or not she heeds their call…is for time to tell…but one thing that the MCD elections have made clear…BJP looks all set…to sweep all of them off their feet…the next time the country goes to polls. Wonder if there’s anyone who can stop the beast?!?
