The splashing of water, the pitter-patter of raindrops, the warm cuppa and a moist cool weather, don’t these invoke fresh childhood memories? What if you got all these on your next getaway trip? Here’s a useful guide to help you choose where to land up this monsoon before it goes and leaves us high and dry:
- Cherrapunji, Meghalaya: No monsoon list is complete without the mention of the previously known wettest place on earth (it has since been overtaken by Mawsynram). Meghalaya has immense natural beauty and everything blooms during monsoon. The roads and conditions are pristine and it is only a few hours from a major airport in Guwahati, Assam.
- Lahaul, Himachal Pradesh – IF scenic routes, bind boggling views and adventurous roads is your thing, head over to Lahaul valley in the pristine tourist hill state of Himachal Pradesh. A biking trip may not be recommended but if coupled with good gear and waterproof equipment, nothing is treacherous enough.
- Mussoorie, Uttarakhand – The queen of the hills, as it is fondly called, this bustling hill station in the heart of Uttarakhand is such a loved destination for people, that an advance booking might be recommended. But, it is worth the hype and is sure to give you views that dreams are made of.
- Gokarna, Karnataka – This coastal beauty is another favourite for people but very few people know that the true beauty of Gokarna is viewed during monsoons. Skies that you can never imagine looked like this and the quaintness of this place will give you the much needed me-time. However, when it rains it pours and quite literally Gokarana will give you enough to fill you up to the brim.
- Agumbe, Karnataka – This is a famous trek and a lot of people prefer going in the monsoons due to the raging waterfalls and evergreen surroundings it has to offer. Along with ruins of temples and breathtaking views, an old classic ‘Malgudi Days’ was also shot here, making it a perfect runaway point.
- Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra – We cannot miss mentioning this awesome locale that is already quite popular among the locals. From plenty of views to greet you and a demanding trek, to excellent food options and flowers galore, this hill station has everything to please you during your getaway.
- Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu – The southernmost point of the sub continental part of India and a place surrounded by water on 3 sides, this I the first place which receives rainfall during monsoons. You can also find glorious sunsets and massive architectures to keep you busy. A plus point is that not a lot of people visit Kanyakumari during the monsoons and hence hotels, flights and general travel expenses tend to be very low at this time.
