Mumbai – the Land of Dreams. Is there a greater city on India’s western seaboard? I think not. You may call me biased, but if it were not so, then why would all of India want to go to this city? Pursuing it with a relentless passion, urged by something deep within them as it responds to the sound of Bombay. Despite the sweltering heat and humidity, unpredictable rains, and overpopulation, it still remains a charming city, where the colonial past goes hand in hand with the developing world of the new century.
With that in mind, here are some amazing places in Mumbai for youngsters to feel the vibe of the city:
1. Shivaji Park
If you’re a sports aficionado, then there’s no better place to start than Shivaji Park. Located in the heart of the city, in Dadar, it is full of people playing cricket, practicing football, indulging in badminton, or just running, to stay in shape. All day long, for seven days of the week, this place is full to the brim with aspiring sportsters and enthusiasts.
2. Versova or Marve Beach
A little away from the overcrowded and polluted shores of Juhu beach lie the clean sands of Versova Beach. And diagonally opposite it (as the crow flies), is Madh Island, where lies Marve Beach. These are much cleaner and quieter alternatives to the madness and hullaballoo of Juhu. Check them out on a pleasant weekend. The drive to Marve – once you cross the traffic ridden link road – is often a pleasant one. Both are good places to have some alone time.
3. Marine Lines
From suave, high class restaurants, to small eateries and roadside stalls, to pubs and clubs, Marine Lines has it all. The Queen’s Necklace is brightly lit at night, attracting people from all over. Its twinkling lights and the soothing winds as you sit, watching the vastness of the Arabian Sea are an unparalleled delight.
4. The Irani Cafes
Hearkening to the colonial era the many century old Irani cafes are a delight to foodies, with their authentic, lip-smacking Parsi fare. The best part? The prices! Most of these old cafes such as Kyani Restaurant and its ilk have prices which appear to not have risen in decades. Light on the pocket, but heavy on the stomach! They’ll leave your taste buds tingling.
5. Bandstand, Carter’s, Hill Road
Surprised at the mention of another sea-side area? Well, what do you expect, when we talk about an Island City.
Hill Road is a great place to get some shopping done, with branded and faux-branded clothes available at steal prices – especially if you are good at bargaining.
Meanwhile, Bandstand in Bandra is a hub for youngsters. With many restaurants, cafes and the like situated just at the edge of the sea, it draws everyone, from college students to adults. The entire region, from Cater’s to Bandstand, is full of many interesting nooks and crannies, with a mix of good architecture, old buildings, great food places, and the inviting, seductive sea-breeze.
